Retro Tuesday: Tuesday is....

Soylent Green day! Of course! How could we forget that?

First of all I want to thank every one who sent me some Get Well Soon comments! As a matter of fact I slept much better (6 hours is way better than 2) and today my head is clearer.

So for Retro Tuesday today my post will be food related...

And movie related....

Ok so yesterday I watched Soylent Green. Made in 1973 directed by Richard Fleisher and starring Charlston Heston. This movie was a big deal in the 70’s.
Here’s a bit of the story…The earth is over populated, man has used up a lot of ressources (sounds familiar???), real food is scarce and the government is feeding most of the population with Soylent (red, orange, green). Turns out that the green kind is not made with planckton as advertised….Soylent Green is people!!!

Talk about the ultimate recycling! Here's a taste!

I remember being all impressed with that movie when I first saw it the late 70’s,but yesterday I laughed quite a lot…A woman had a kitchen full of Corelle cornflower blue dishes, contraband no doubt.

Some sets are really great examples of 70’s design. You get to see some popular actors from that period also. But what got me is that the guy who wrote the book was a visionary…And the planet is dying and we’re too late to do something….woa! that is WAY too depressing for a Tuesday! One thing is for sure: I don’t want to eat Soylent Green!

Happy Retro Tuesday everyone! And don't forget to visit my pal Tracy at the Original Retro Tuesday party right HERE !!!

Earth hour

Saturday night, nothing good on TV....There's never anything on TV on saturday night. Except SNL and usually too late for little old me!

So what a wonderful occasion to participate in Earth Hour! We went dark from 8:30 to 9:30 last night and spent the time eating microwave popcorn and spying on our neighbors to see if their houses were dark....I live in a small dead end street with only 6 houses and I'm sad to report that only 50% of the residents participated....But I'm positive that next year more will do.

When you think about it every little gesture counts! Shutting off lights when not in use, replacing light bulbs with neon bulbs or LED, recycling, composting, shopping locally...Planting drought resistant plants and even replacing grass with plants that don't require as much water and of course using reusable shopping bags! And those pesky plastic water bottles! We use a Brita to filter our drinking water and the water is sweet and refreshing!

Shopping locally is hard in a cold climate, let's face it we would only eat carrots, potatoes, cabbage and onions in winter(good veggies but lack variety!!!). I try to buy products from my province at least, so now my dishwashing liquid (Bio-Vert)comes from Laval (15 min north of Montreal) and is certified enviromental choice, my powdered soap for the dishwasher (produits ecolo lemieux) is not only biodegredable but made in Montreal and my detergent (La parisienne) has the same provenance. As for the price well they have come a long way, the liquid dish soap and the detergent are really competitively priced and I find them less expensive than 'National Brands' quite often! The powdered dishwasher soap is 8.00$ for 2 kilos and lasts a really long time. So I figure I'm also a winner there!

Doing my part makes sense!

Later!

Xmas tree Oh Xmas tree what will become of thee???

So once again it is time to put Xmas in storage until next December...sigh!
It makes me feel sad....yet....When I do yoga in the mornings I stretch INTO the tree!!! So what will happen to my tree?
My municipality has adopted new rules regarding garbage pick up: We have the recycling on Thrusdays-I tell you that bin is so HUGE- 2 people could stand in it!!!
Since they started collecting the recyclables we have gone from 3 garbage bags a week to 1!
I compost also (even in winter) I empty my little stainless steel pail (from Lee Valley) directly in the veggie plots and when the earth thaws I mix everything (seems to be working so far).
They also distributed a similar grey bin on wheels for the regular garbage-but we cannot put what we like in our bins-no grass clippins, dead leaves, earth, ciment, asphalt, flammable or explosive materials or anything that doesn't completely fit in the bin.....
So basically NO TREASURES!!! No furniture, mirrors and other interesting what nots that I would gather on Sunday night....I am sad!
The town's maintenance division is supposed to pick up bulky waste the third Friday of every month. Let me tell you that i'll be waiting to see what gorgeous stuff I can find next Thursday night !!!
About those dead leaves: they do pick them up but only in paper bags (that don't close) and only 3 saturdays in November- Where was I when they voted that one????
I live near the water and the wind is MEGA blowing all the time. Even when all my leaves are picked up, it winds and I get leaves from I don't know where, so I always have 5 or 10 more bags (that won't make it in time for the pick up....) Anywho....I had to call the town hall because I had no idea what to do with my tree and the new rules.
Well it turns out that they will pick up trees next week and turned them into mulch- Free mulch I could pick up at the maintenance division yard ( That I like!!!)
WOW that feels good! a good old fashion rant!
