Thrifted

Aaaaahhhhh! the thrill of the hunt and the joy of the find!

Thrifting has been to an all time low here...but last Friday I was gifted a trip to Renaissance courtesy of crazy ass traffic....

Here's what I found!

A sweet vintage cookie tin for my collection

A sunshiny yellow Melmac cream and sugar set

A vintage icing seringe with 6 different tips

I saw a Xmas blowmold that I didn't have....a teddy bear. The price was pretty steep and the condition so-so; so I leftt it there!

I hope to find a new one soon :)

Thriftastic Day! Part Two

We finally got around to empty the car trunk, however I was busy with the usual chores....cooking,washing, changing the bed, tidying the yard....and looking for Dan's glasses, which we found after 3 hours of on and off searching!

Here's some more goodies I found yesterday!

Yes I know that nobody smokes anymore, but really this is pink and Melmac and it makes me want to light up! It will bw in the shop any day.

I totaly fell in love with this.....

It is pristine! The glaze is perfect, no chips just like it was produced yesterday!
I don't know if I'll be able to list it...It's too delicious.

This frame I foun at the Montreal Mega Reuse Center. It was really cruddy and dusty and even came with it's own pigeon poop. It will look great in my living room with a coat of paint or dye (if Dan gets his way) and a new picture inside. It is soooo mid-century.

Now for a thrify find that I bumped into in New Hampshire...

It is a brand new still in box mug tree! From Kmart....SWEET

You get 6 mugs and the tree, all in mint condition.

Well that's it for tonight!

Have a great thrifting week (and working week). Be well my thrifty friends!

Fiddleheads, Thrifty Finds and Kitschy Lunch!

Here up north, it's a long weekend: Fete des Patriotes in Québec and Victoria Day for the rest of Canada. Usually we pack the car and head to Maine or New Hampshire and even to Ontario....But not this year.

We are painting the living room and dining room and the staircase....It was long overdue!

But first things first! It is fiddlehead season and I couldn't resist. I love the green wild taste. It tastes like the forest.

Fiddleheads are the furled fronds of young ferns.

You need to blanch them then cook them in a skillet with a bit of butter. I added some cayenne and salt and pepper.
It looks even better in a sweet Pyrex casserole!

Even if we had a lot of work to do today we had to run some errands....and lo and behold we came accross a HUGE garage sale, I just had to stop because let's face it I'm a total addict and I haven't found mucho cool stuff in a while!

I was rewarded with this:

A 70's pitcher and a melmacesque(no stamp) cream and sugar set in a lovely shade of salmon. I say melmacesque  but it really feels like Melmac.

I also found a red pouch filled with stuff for a quarter. The stuff was porcelain brooches ,a brooch and earrings set- lovely with rhinestones and roseries, quite a few!

Pictures later.

Now for lunch I was in a totally vintage, thrifty mood, so I made sandwiches....

We each had one half with pastrami and the other was ham.

They were served with pimento olives and vintage sword cocktail picks. I got a box of those still sealed in my fave church basement for a dime last year. They were made in Korea for F.W. Woolworth. Now i believe the last Woolworth was closed about 25 years ago in Montreal. It was on Ste-Catherine street, when it was a real shopping street, not just shoes and cheap and ridiculously small clothes.

We painted all through the afternoon and I also worked on  the BIG 2011 DE-CRAP-A-THON.

More painting for us tomorrow!

Sleep tight and don't let the bedbugs bite! :)

Retro Tuesday: Brought to you by Melmac

Aaaahhhh! Melmac! I love Melmac. I love
finding it and handling it and finding good homes for it. In the last year I found some amber, white, pink, turquoise and green all of them near mint condition, but I found some really unusual pieces last week turquoise and white! How cool is that?
They were hiding in a thrift shop I had written off because it was snobbish, stuffy and expensive! On a whim last friday I decided to go and drag SD (step daughter) there. It was great fun! Here's the Melmac some good ol' Canadian Melmac made in Toronto!

And this

I'd never seen cups with 2 different colors before!

So of course I was reminded of this ad in Chatelaine dec. 1958

For those who don't know Chatelaine is the oldest Canadian women's magazine still in circulation. It was dubbed The Canadian Home Journal. It's really nice to see ads for canadian products. Who would've thought Melmac would still be popular today?

You'll be able to visit those dynamite pieces and more right HERE

And don't forget for all you vintage lovers to drop by Crazy Suburban Mom's blog HERE for more Retro Tuesday!

Thrifty Finds!

I had a super day yesterday! I came down to downtown Montreal in the afternoon and then the marathon began!

I had to stop at the Salvation Army! I just couldn't help myself...lol

I made a quick prayer to the thrifting gods and went inside. I found some nice unused mustard and orange napkins (vintage of course) and a melmac cream and sugar set (minty fresh...) and a really cute JAJ casserole with roses on the side. Those items I'll put in the Etsy shop because I can't keep them, but there was NO way I could leave them there, they were just too nice !!!

For myself I found a Pyrex Sunflower 043 lid and 2 delicious milkglass tumblers, and a special cook book for my dad (I can't tell you which one 'coz my Dad is a regular reader and it would mess up the surprise). In case you weren't aware Father's day is just around the corner....The book was a bonus, the bigger gift is supernice if you're into that kind of stuf....

After I made a quick stop at a fancy grocery store to get fancy ingredients I can't find in the boondocks....then a sprint to the Chinatown for some Hoisin sauce and Oyster sauce (and Wasabi peas...come to me..you little green nuggets of JOY!!!) and last but not least a power walk to Old Montreal where the restaurant was.

I was quite surprised by Steak Frites, the steak was tender served with a nice cream and cognac sauce and green beans...plus ALL YOU CAN EAT HOMEMADE FRIES!!!! How can you beat that??? And a salad was included in the price also! It was bring your own wine....good deal

I had a lot of fun with my girlfriends, I hope we all meet again over the summer and that we never loose touch!

Thrift bounty!!!

February has been a really good month for thrifting! I seem to be at the right place and the right time....And since I opened my little shop on Etsy, I figured I can buy all the things I had no place for and sell them!!!

I found the syrup pitcher at a community thrift shop and also the Old Town blue cups. Speaking of the cups....I couldn't really look at them because they were tapped together in a pack of four, so when I got home I saw that I had 3 cups with the design and a plain white one! I was a bit pissed off! But what the....Maybe some good soul will adopt them.....LOL

The divided snack dish came from the Salvation army and required a lot of elbow grease.....It was so dirty, and even showed signs of cigarette burns! But with a good soaking and scrubbing, it came out just like new!

I just fell in love with the turquoise salad servers(also from the Salvation Army)....They were so vintage! And really clean....And I'm happy to report that they found a good home!!!

Last pale blue piece, still from the Salvation Army, is what I call a candy dish.....It could be used for a vase, a planter, a catchall.
I just find the shape delightful....I would keep everything....but it has been made clear that we need room! LOL

I sure hope the rest of the month will bring me plenty of finds and that March will be even better!

Pyrex has been scarce lately.....And either the piece is too expensive or in really bad shape....

I have been hunting for some Fry Glass pieces, for my Dad and so far I have found a very nice casserole with lid and craddle and 2 custard cups. But that is for another post......

Happy hunting!
