Packing and Displaying

Since we are painting the kitchen grey and white the existing
Pyrex had to go!

Of course I am thinking that I will miss my Pink Daisy Pyrex during the
transition. In theory pink and grey should work and does work but I wanted a
new color scheme and turquoise and white was it.
I will miss the Pink Daisy so much because I associate this pattern with my grandma
as I inherited her 045 casserole.

This will be the home of one of the new display.

It's not done yet so no pics!

Have a great night!

Cheesy Goodness (in PYREX)

Once in a while a recipe catches my eye and the other when Dan dumped a little booklet on the dining room table with the words : Hey I found those recipes, you might like them....

Those were Easter type recipes and we don't do Easter (we celebrate the holiday, we pray and we usually eat some ham but that is about it)  .

The recipe that really caught my eye was the Cheesy Baked Quinoa.

Here goes

3 tbsp butter divided
8 cups baby spinach, kale or augula leaves (I used about half a bunch of kale and after I threw in some thawed frozen squeezed dry spinach)
1 leek white part only finely chopped (used an onion here)
1 1/2 cups whole grain quinoa insed and drained.
2 1/2 cups educed sodium chicken broth,divided
1/2 cup 36% whipping cream
2 tbsp Dijon mustard
1/4 tsp ground pepper
2 cups grated medium old cheddar cheese (I used Kraft Cracker Barrel orange medium old cheddar because I want FLAVOUR not just gooyee cheese)

Preheat oven to 350F (180 C)

Heat 1 tbsp butter in a large ovenproof skillet over medium heat. add kale or spinach and saute 2 tp 3 minutes or until just wilted, transfer to a boel and set aside.
Add remaining butter and leek or onion and saute for 4 o 5 minutes until golden.
Stir in quinoa until well coated. Aad 2 cups chicken broth. Cover and cook 10 minutes or until most of the fluid is absorbed. This took me more like 15 ish 20 minutes.
Whisk remaining both with cream, mustard and pepper. Stir in quinoa mixture along with reserved kale or spinach and 1 cup cheese. Pour in Pyrex dish if desired.
Smooth top.
Bake, uncovered for  15 minutes and sprinkle with remaining cheese and bake another 15 minutes until bubbly.
Makes 6 to 8 servings.

It made quite a lot and was delicious! No, really...
it was even good room temp!
I will freeze this dish for another day....

Oh and the bonus is it is gluten free.
I serve it with leftove fish but they mention it would be great with chicken or ham

                              Enjoy!

All ready

We got an Eater lunch invitation from my cousin Josee.

She lives up north, in the mountains. She summounned what is left of the Montreal clan for an ham/ mashed potatoes/ green stuff and much fun lunch.

She asked me to do an appetizer but there was a bit of how shall I say it? That is when my dad decided he was going to make fennel salad and I was to bring chocolates....

Oh well, this got me pretty confused and finally I decides to stand my ground and actually bring some salads (which are not technically apps, I grant you).

We are baguette/ olives/ pickles/ pate app people. We like to graze.

So I made fennel and orange salad and asian slaw.

Dan made sure the lids were secured. What is not to love?
The Pimk Daisy was Gran-Mimi's so it was just like bringing her to Easter lunch; well the next best thing.

I tought that the Pink Daisy and the green jug went so well together
I just had to snap the moment up.

We had a great lunch with great laughs and best of all the young ones were eager to take leftovers with them for lunches! COOL!

Today we just hung out, read the newspaper and watched the final three episodes of The Walking Dead. I can't believe I will have to go without for 6 months!

Pyrex Lovelies

Today was surely one of the most amazing days of the year! Let me explain.

We were full of energy, we were in a cleaning/fixing mood. We were up bright and early and got tons of things done!

Before I get to the details, I want to welcome my new followers! Welcome! If you love thrifting, vintage, Pyrex, glassware, lamps, Christmas, roadtrip, cats, gardening, eating local and food in general; well you're at the right place!

Sit back, relax, grab a snack or a pint.

Now I decided to change the Pyrex displays so I had the opportunity to take pictures to share with you.

Let's start with Snowflake, i.e: Turquoise, White and Charcoal

White Snowflakes on Turquoise and Turquoise Snowflakes on white

043 in White, Turquoise and Charcoal.

Open bakers! I LOVE,LOVE these!

Why? Because they are not divided that's why!

Here they are in White, Turquoise and Charcoal.

I was also able to capture the Pink Daisy bunch hanging out.

Here they are!

Now the really important piece here is the 045, it belonged to my paternal grandmother Gran-Mimi.
My Dad actually remembers it from the diner table!

It might have contained sheperd's pie or oven baked pasta.

Also smilig for the camera is the 043, the space saver (large) and the open baker.

Missing from shot ans quite shy is the smaller space saver.

I hope to charm it into posing tomorrow.

Now on a whim I decided to clean the bottom shelf of one of the akward corner cabinets....
It should house a lazy susan, but instead it's baking central!

Square Utility dishes in Lime and Horizon

Lasagna pan in Lime
and a smaller version I had no idea existed in Flamingo.

Pie plates in Lime and Flamingo and round cake pan
in Lime,Flamingo and Pink Desert Dawn (top one)

Now I have a theory...

I think that Canadian Pyrex wasn't made with as much care as the one
made in good ol' U.S.A....

Why? Well most of my Canadian made pieces have a funky weird flaw inside, like it was in the mold....It looks like a wave and is not glazed so everything stains it.

And they are harder to clean.

I'll try to capture it for you tomorrow.

Well that's it for today because I am soooo tired and I heard Dan and
Bandito snoring to the sofa!

'Night night!

VTT: Nostalgia and Pink Spring

While I was looking to complete my Pyrex Primary bowl set; (see last week's post HERE)  I got a call…from my Dad.

And he told me that he might have the largest yellow bowl that belonged to his mother( my grandma) in the apt downstairs. My Dad owns a 2 apt house and he rents the downstairs one to friends from abroad that come to work in Montreal.

The downstairs apt used to be my grandma’s before she had to go to an assisted facility. So I take the train and go see my dad…and we go to the first floor and I’m all aflutter (you know the possibility of Pyrex, free and with provenance!). And we open all the cupboards and the drawers and NO yellow bowl; my dad is sure he’s seen it….But then we find this….

And this

And I’m so emotional. I’m getting an actual dish my gran cooked in. Dad says she made tuna casserole in it and the small one held salt.

And I go home with my heart full of Gran-Mimi. And everytime I open my cupboard I smile and think of her…

So this week I’m feeling a bit blue (like delphite) and I needed to invoke the Spring Gods

to bring in the nice weather. It has been slushing (rain and snow) for 4 days straight!

So I made this….

I don't know if the sun will shine but it sure cheered me up!

Have a fantastic VTT and be sure to drop by Suzanne's blog Colorado Lady !

VTT: Pyrex Open Baking Dishes

Now you all know (or most of you anyways) how I love Pyrex....If you're amongst those who didn't know, please read some of the older posts and you'll see my Pyrexia in all it's splendor!
As time passes, my focus on collecting Pyrex changes. At first I HAD to have everything, EVERYTHING! After quite a long while I realised that some pieces just took too much space! Then I went crazy for some NIB (new in box pieces) I have 2 and never use them, they stay in their box in the basement....:(
In September 2009 I developped Open Baking Dish envy(A.K.A Open Bakers)...I felt they were so much more useful than the divided dishes; which I find lack space because of the division and they're a pain to put away because they don't stack up well....
I found my first one in early October at the Gananoque Flea market in Ontario. I got so excited I nearly screamed!!! I was holding it close to my heart all the way to the cash!
They were manufactured in the 50's. They're more uncommon than the divided dish and the charcoal one is the least common of the bunch, but if you look hard enough you're bound to find one!

Here's the Pink Daisy (real name White Daisy) in action. I started a bad of cat grass for the kitties. They miss grass a lot. You'd swear cats are related to cows. When you are in the garden you can see all the cats snacking away on the tender green shoots....
Don't forget to head on to www.colorado.blogspot.com for more VTT fun!

Crash!

Yesterday around 2 p.m, I fried my computer...everything stopped (My heart included!)

I found a guy in the local phone book would could pickup my laptop and fix it and bring it back....

He came to pick it up just as promised left me a receipt. I got a partial diagnosis later last night....My C drive was full (surprise!)....he would clean it up and bring it back.

Today I got my laptop back....I have tons of room now. But when I fried it, i fried it good!!! Real good!
I lost sound, the external mouse, and both my USB ports are gone too! Bouhoubouhou!!! Which means (I don't really care about the sound) that I can't print, can't use my external drive, can't download pictures....I probably missed something too! In the process I lost my recipe book. It's on my external drive...but since I can't use it....

My techie also told me that my laptop was living on borrowed time (lol), but I knew that. I bought it second hand and was really surprised that it lasted soooo long!

Well at least I got most of my Pyrex pictures and am already working on a way to get a new laptop.

So that's why I'm posting nice cheerful Pyrex pictures. I find them relaxing and happy. Tech gadgets will break eventually it's a fact!

Being 24 hrs without the internet was quite a change. I didn't even open the TV! I just worked on classifying all the garage sale stuff, making boxes for the salvation army and baking brownies to thank my neighbor Claire to take me to the shopping center. I also invented a nice chinese supper...BBQ chicken breasts in spare ribs sauce (chinese garlic sparerib sauce) and rice noodles, green beans and carrots in black bean sauce....Lip smakcing!

Inexpensive spruce up!

When I was a wee girl I loved clogs like you wouldn't believe!
I had some navy, orange, white, brown,turquoise....I was at my local Zellers (I cannot compare it with a U.S. store because I only know Walmart-which we have and Target, which is a gazillion times better than Zellers!),anywho, I was strolling along taking my time absorbing all the shapes and color that differ so much from my usual world...
And I saw these! The mostest, adorablest, cutest, pinkest little clogs! With embroided flowers...sigh! Suddenly I was 9 again holding my father's hand strolling on the cobbled streets of Rome! I felt soooo,so safe like nothing could ever go wrong- Things didn't really go wrong but I very rarely feel this safe.

Actually I was at the shopping center for a new bra (always a fun task!) and I looked at the slipcovers (129$) for a sofa, yikes! I didn't think it was that expensive (not really expensive but,you know) so I saw this display for single sheets on sale...SCORE!!! 2 ivory flat sheet at 7.97 each sewn togheter plus 2 pillowcases at .50 a pair (church basement) and I have a clean and cute (in my opinion) summer sofa!
Even nicer with that adorable cat: The Boubou! The perfect sofa accessory...lol
Okay now the garage sale is tomorrow (I'm soooo excited and I cannot hide it)...i have to get the remaining boxes from the basement, a couple of baskets, I already emptied a pine chest that (hopefully) will find a new house, I have to make a geological dig for a foot bath in the under the stairs closet...lol
The weather channel is forecasting sunny with a couple of clouds....This should be fun!

Church bazaar

Every year before Halloween the church near my house hosts its annual bazaar in the nearby school gym. I usually go there to purchase Phentex slippers (because they las forever!!!). Las year I found a small red refrigerator dish (sans lid ) for a quarter...So I was very hopeful for this year!
Well my optimism paid off! On your left is a picture of my loot.
4 Corelle saucers with Flamingo trim (for the kitties), 2 Glasbake custard cups, 1 Pink daisy 1 1/2 QT casserole with lid and a small McCoy violet planter for 2.50$. Imagine that!!!
It is a wonder I manage to find these treasures in a sea of people...It was soooo warm ( I was sweating from places a lady doesn't sweat from lol) and I was pushed and shoved and pulled in all directions. When I saw the casserole it was as is time stood still...there was silence and then I saw it, just standing there minding its own business....
Same with the McCoy. I just say to myself (aproaching the home decor table) wouldn't it be fun if I found a McCoy? Well ladida, I should play the lottery more often!!!
The pot just appeared before my eyes....I also managed to break 3 or 4 glasses with the lid of a Pyrex teapot (oops) they made me pick all the glass from the box (ouf!) but nobody was hurt!

I had a wonderful cupcake with white and turquoise icing (but I didn't manage to take a picture of it, I inhaled that cupcake...hihihi)
There was stuff for everyone and you could even have a hearty lunch for 3 dollars (sandwich, chips, soup, coffee and dessert).
After all that excitement I walked home with SO (significant other) while pulling my trusty buggy (just like in Brimfield Mass)....
I would like to give a shout out to my dad: Hi Dad! have a good day :)!!!
And to all my faithful readers (yes the 6 of you, lol) Till next time....Have a super day and Happy thrifting!
