Surprise Thrifting

On Saturday there wasn't any plans for thrifting. We just went to Dan's daughther's place to measure windows and figure out what we needed to repair a wall and paint.

But I had to stop at Renaissance! Just so you know the weirdos from Thrusday night were all there on Saturday afternoon.

The employees are in the weirdo category as well...There's the lady that runs after you in the store to leave your bag at the cash (Heck the person that steels a $2 dollar shirt really needs it) and the cashiers that don't understand the cash register and the manager from France who knows everything and won't hesitate to correct your french. LOVELY!

I found the Butterfly Gold butterdish at Renaissance.
the Oxo mug I found somewhere else....

On our way back, Dan saw a giant sign advertizing a garage sale. This sale was amazing! It is the once a year unbelievable sale. It was in a hardware store that closed in the 80's judging by the merchandise.

Dead stock Androck utensils made in Canada.

A dead stock orange Thermos
and 2 lovely Federal bowls with green flowers.

 And a tackylicious Mushroom trivet

I still don't know what will stay and what will go in the Etsy store
Of course I still think about stuff I left behind...
There was so much! I could've gone every day for a week and buy stuff everyday.
But it was late in the day and the place is far from home so I got stuff that grabbed me.

Be well and keep thrifting friends!

Oooooh! Diamond hiding in Value Village!

I had written a fabulous and witty post but blogger just ate it up! QWERTYUIOLMNBVCXZ!"/$%?&*IO)!

So here goes! Yesterday (Sunday) we decided to head west (yes again) to Morrisburg to visit the McAffie's Flea market. Morrisburg is about 35 minutes west of Cornwall by the scenic highway (translation: yard sales and Market Place flea where we got our buffet and credenza).
I had brought a boatload odf magazines (not vintage) to donate. So I say: Do you think Value Village is opened on Sundays (a surprising amount of shops are closed on Sunday in Ontario) and Dan answers: I guess so. Anyways we have to drive by...and lo and behold it is open! I'm just gonna pop in to drop the mags, ok?

So Dan says: I'm sure you're gona browse, no? Of course I am! And I was rewarded with this....

Oh yes come to mamma! You beautiful Cinderella Promotional 1958 decorator casserole!
I'm gonna make you mine! All mine, all mine.....My precious.......

And for only...

Even Dan was excited! And that is a big deal coming from someone who works to move the collection out of the house!

I really enjoy McAffie's Flea market but the sellers have CRAZY prices!

See the Friendship 403 in the background? Well the seller wanted 23$ for it!
And she kept hovering and asking me if I wanted some help! I DON'T WANT HELP LADY' YOU PYREX IS TOO FREAKING EXPENSIVE, SO I TAKE PICS TO POST ABOUT IT ON MY BLOG! OKAY?

That felt goooood!

Pardon the crappy pic, the lighting was horendous!

The big Hostess bowl was going for 35$, really!

Another crappy pic!

My fave booth is the basement! It is basically one huge, dusty, hodge podge booth and the lady wants to sell! You know what that means, right? Great deals!

My For Trade post you come out any day now!

Sleep tight :)

Retro Tuesday: Thanks but no thanks!

A glorious Retro Tueday to you!

One of my fave blogs is 1972 the Retro WW Experiment. Mimi is hilarious and always posts weird recipes. Some of the weirder ones contain weiners as ingredients! I feel that hotdogs are such a WW NONO! But I was not following WW in 1972 and I'm sure that they were a  nice change of pace from that god awful liver...

So when I saw these pics I thought of Mimi and her Thanks but no thanks segment....

Budget Beaters! From Campbell's....Spaghetti with tomato soup and hot dogs! And a Tuna Burger! I know the economy is slowly recovering but are any of you making this?

I personnaly feel a baked potatoe is something perfect with just a bit of butter and sour cream (ok,ok chives) but with tuna...let's just say it it gives me the willies!

Which would you choose? The Spam country dinner? The Spam rice ring? the Spam 6-in-1 Supper Bake?
Well NONE for me! This is the original mystery meat! What was it before? leftovers to be....By the way the winner is...SPAM Country Dinner!

And last but not least...I actually started feeling faint when I saw this one....

Baked bean topped with sliced 'cheese' green bell pepper rings and ketchup! Who dreamed up that nightmarish recipe? The good folks at Kraft of course!
Please don't bother inviting me if your cooking that for dinner tonite!

All those wonderful retro ads were courtesy of Ladies Home Journal  November 1958.

Retro Tuesday: Merry Pyrex Xmas!!!

I have been sitting on this one for a couple of weeks now, and I wanted to save it for Xmas....But I can't help myself! Every Tuesday I think about it and today I couldn't stop myself!!!

When I got my vintage mags, my first thought was Pyrex ads! I felt cheated, none of the mags had some....Until the last one a good old canadian Chatelaine December 1958!

I just couldn't believe that the only mag with a Pyrex ad came from my own backyard!

Here it is! All a girl wants for Xmas....

Actually I feel the prices are pretty steep for 1958. Let's compare: I got get a bottle of french perfume for 5.00$ and the blue bowl at the bottom is 7.50$. A year subscription to Chatelaine was 1.50$....And the cheapest dish on thie page is the Barbed wire one right bottom...Makes you go...uh?
I just wished my scanner could scan the whole thing.....No I don't have all of them! I have the blue bowl minus lid and rack and the barbed wire one all dressed. I wouldn't mind the pink one if you know what I mean.....

Hungry for more? Head out to Crazy Suburban Mom's blog right HERE  for some more Retro Tuesday FUN!!!

Retro Wednesday 'coz I had so much fun!

Boy oh boy am I sore this morning! I look like a big ol' piece of plywood; I don't bend! Since it was very mild yesterday I took out my trusty bike and ran some errands...which translate in 40 minutes of excercise! Working out the muscles that hadn't seen a lot of action since early December. I rode my bike a couple of times since then but never like this. Recently my excercise has been: from the couch to the computer, then to the kitchen then back again so it was high time I moved! Granted I line dance on Sunday but that is not enough...

Today I decided to show you where all those amazing (yucky) gelatin salads were probably made. In the November 1958 edition of the Ladie's Home Journal I found this fascinating article: Six unforgettable kitchens you'd like to cook in. These are actual kitchens! Here we go!

The John Spear jrs Long Island (5 minutes from the Atlantic)

They obviously have oodles of money...but I don't like this kitchen. Way too much wood! And the chandelier??? PASS!

The Jerome Cardins Maryland suburb

The cabinets are violet, wild but it works for me. I could cook in there for sure. Dual ovens? I'm so there! And there is a microwave (that is scary!). My Dad pestered me for years to get a microwave and finally I gave in in 1989...I wonder how safe was the technology in 1958...Hey Betty is that a third arm coming out of your head?

The Charles Whitneys New York's Rockland county

Stone wall with a gazillion cast iron skillets? No thank you! I like the pale blue open shelves and I love the stove...I'd like one just like that for my kitchen! The Perfection salad (shredded cabbage that looks like worms) was proably made on the premises regularly!

The Edward Stones Mid-Manhattan

If it's pink then there's a really good chance I will love it! I really like the one piece stainless steel counter top and of course all the pink appliances. The grill work not so much, but then again it's mid-Manhattan!

The Irving Penns 200 year old house in the country

Ok there's a pink window treatment but that's not enough pink for me! This is definitely 1958's idea of country. I feel it's too woody and dark. The cucumber orgy salad would add a touch of freshness here!

The H.M. Dancers Virginia

This one reminds me of my grandmother's kitchen (it's the yellow). These folks have a fireplace in the kitchen and a revolving spit on a charcoal cooking area. I hope they have good ventilation! Here I see the lime shrimp jiggly affair...

By the way I haven't seen a single piece of Pyrex! Don't these people know what's good for them?

Have a nice one faithful readers!
