Found at the thrift

Saturday after the periodical hair makeover...

On the way home, there is a thrift and I can never seem to remember the name...It is really called Hope crossroads or crossroads of hope; of course I'm translating loosely.

Of course I'm always full of hope...Well you never know...

A big pile of computer carcasses

                                           A nest of forest fancies

 I couldn't resist Pyrex

The 502 for 2$, the 501 for .25$ and  the
beaker for 1$

I'm starting to see more and more lab glass in my neck of the woods and I like it.

Here's a picture of lab glass in action.

A nice way to make the plant cuttings grow.

See you soon :)

I have a date with my pillow zzzzzzzz

Left at the thriftshop

It was slim pickings last night at the thrift shop but I saw a couple of beauties!

Music box with boy figurine broken and glued back up
and not very well I might add!

I'm guessing red carrots S & P, they were a good deal at .60 cents each but up close they were all scratched up so PASS!

Super cool percolator but no cord....PASS!

But saddest of all the sweet primary blue Pyrex 401 bowl
all dull and scratched from the dishwasher! PASS!

I got a small carpet (new) and some vintage napkins and placemats, but I didn't cleaned them so no picture.

TGIF! I can't wait to cook a turkey and veg out, amongst other things....

                                           Be well!

Thrifted!

It was so good to smell the slightly stale moth ball tainted air of the church basement....

It makes me feel so alive (yes I can hear you, crazy as a bat, I am)

So this is what I found....

Needlepoint seacoast
Judging by the frame, it's circa 1960.

I'm thinking of re-doing my bedroom this coming Spring in a vintage beachy cottage theme; so
it will fit perfectly!

Nighty night

Finally!

Finally!

I finally found the camera ansd downloaded some Maine pictures!

                               Sunrise over Saco Bay

                                Seagulls fishing

It was magical as usual. I love going to Maine late in the season, when it's not in season anymore. The hotels and motels are opened (most of them) and only a few restaurants and shops are opened.
The tourist factor is low and the locals come out.

I had plenty of opportunity to drink Pumpkin Pie Spice coffee! YUM!

I was even able to find......

Pumpkin beer! Pumpkinhead is delicious, smooth and spicy.
The perfect drink for a Fall afternoon; after you raked all those leaves!

But most of all we chilled out, did the usual: Shop, eat, walk, sleep, walk, eat,
sleep, eat, shop, walk, walk, shop again,sleep...and then it was time to go home
                                       again.

We scored great deals at the outlets....Why would anyone buy full price running shoes in Canada? This always fascinates me, here it's $120-$150 and in the U.S outlets you can get the same pair for $50-$75.
                                       Are the taxes this high???

I thrifted but didn't buy a whole lot...and I still haven't got pics of my finds....

It's getting late and my brain is mush....

                                       Night night my friends!

Snow and thrifty goodness

This has been the year of the non-winter. The temperature has been mild and we've had more rain than snow. That is tragic for Québec!
We've had yesterday our first serious snow fall since I don't know when.....

It all fell very fast and in the space of 90 minutes we had 6 inches on the ground!
Thank god for the train.....

This morning we had a surprise thrifting stop....
I love those, don't you?

Here's some pics of things of interest and others....well you'll decide for yourself!

Are those adorable or what? I think they're salt cellars because of their size. Any ideas?

A cool 70's coffee set.

An imitation of our dining room chairs; cheap imitation mind you but I found it cool that it was a model popular enough to copy.

The wood floor lamp is how shall i put it hilarious! If I ever get a cabin in the woods it will probably be decorated in that oh so tacky style!

There was even a table lamp, YUM!

On the far left was a lamp that I really liked and Dan too, but just how many lamps do we need! We're running out of outlets!

Now let's be serious for a minute and see what we bought, not a lot.....

Some bamboo Florida souvenir coasters still in the original wrapper, 2 unused silicone spatulas (they were there last time I went and I regretted not getting them) and 2 glass furniture coasters; one is Hazel Atlas and the other one Diamond glass from Canada. We've tried the new ones in plastic and they leave dents in our floor but the glass ones don't.

I got the bamboo coasters because they're vintage, tacky, funny and we will use them
in the living room for the coffee table, it's wood and marks easily...

Well that's it for today; I'm off to the living room for some good old fashion couch potatoing!

I LOVE WEEKENDS!

Oh my thrifty finds!

I took the day off and since Dan was on vacation we decided to go on the first thrifting road trip of 2012.

So we packed some snacks and a Tim Horton's gift card and headed west to Ontario. I must admit thrifting was not the first reason to make this day trip. The real reason was to reach Gananoque and scraf some BBQ brisket at the Pig Iron.

It's soooo good and comforting, so homey and everything is homemade. The bread, the meat, the tangy cole slaw, the creamy potato salad, the lemonade, the sweet tea....Truly finger licking good. The owner ever remembered that we had come in September of last year. Oh I forgot the the horseradish sauce that tops the brisket....every time I eat this sandwhich I cry little tears of joy!

On the far right is the Pig Iron BBQ restaurant and on the left you have the Socialist Pig coffee shop. It is situated on King street in historical Gananoque just feet away from a plaque commemorating the Raid on Gananoque during the war of 1812. The American soldiers sure did try very hard to invade the northern shores of the St-Lawrence seaway! You can see plaques in every village bordering the great river.

After a deliciously satsfying lunch we made our way to Brockville, Ontario (I won't bother you with the plaques, the war of 1812 or assorted battles).
King street has amazing historical buildings but at a certain point it becomes more down and out, crusty and sad (read thrifty). There is this really sad Salvation Army store that Dan hates....but I always insist on going....never found anything until yesterday!
Actually the well trained by moi eye of Dan spotted this....

Hum dirty! And fuzzy lol

Dam perfomed some charm magic and the nice lady said the price was .50 cents.

No I don't need a bag. RUN RUN RUN before she realised she made a mistake!

I also found this in a curiosity/antique store still on King Street

I always long for vintage cheap tins but I always
find them crazy expensive. So since the price was right I brought it home with me!

There are no Goodwills in Quebec so I'm always excited to visit one especially on 50% off day!

I found this cutie hiding behind an ugly baking dish....

It is dainty and small and a really cute example of  english Pyrex!

Next thing we knew the sun was setting and it was time to go home!

That was a wonderfully fantastic day and really therapeutic too.
I hope to do that again real soon, Dan is the BEST thrifting companion.

With luck i'll be back tomorow to show the Pyrex I left.....

Tata!

Aaaaahhhhh! The weekend!

Today we had a very productive day!

A quick trip to the hairdresser, a touch of thrifting, we rented a carpet cleaning machine, the balance of the living room baseboard got painted, the hall got a big declutter, the heat registers got a good cleaning, we changed a curtain rod and many other tid bits were taken care of.....and I'm fighting a little cold.

Did I mention I made homemade chicken broth? and veggie soup too?

Here's what I harvested last night, we had a real hot and humid summer with periods of drought and big buckets of rain but the overall harvest is dismal. I thank God that we have other means to feed ourselves, otherwise we would have been skinny and mal-nourished.

The cukes are doing great we had about 20 so far, the green beans, shish....and to my great surprise we have oodles of cherry tomatoes. The italian tomato is a rogue, i didn't planted, it probably came from  the compost pile.

On thursday I went thrifting to Renaissance in Verdun, and I spotted this. This is a fairly rare JAJ Pyrex gravy boat, I was totally in awe. And it was just .99 cents! I forced myself to leave it there because it had 2 big chips on the base. Maybe next time! But I did get plenty of pictures for future FTW? Tuesday!

After all that hard work, I needed a break! So around 5pm I sneaked outside to enjoy the fading day....

A cold one, one of my fave magazine and my latest Pyrex find!
I found The Cracker Barrel and in very good condition. I'm guessing that it originally came with a plastic insert to make it more air tight as with the Stack'n'See storage containers because no way will this canister keep your crackers dry! And I hate a soggy cracker!
However you have a tip on the side of the container.....If you want crisper crackers you can shove the crackers with the glass container in the stove minus the lid of course!

For supper we had grilled steak with Cow Bell Hell rub (from Maine), mushroom barley risotto and field tomatoes (from my CSA basket)

The temperature has been very cold in the last few days and I'm worried my swimming days will be over soon, rats! I hope to take a dip or 2 tomorrow in between chores. Well they're not realy chores. I see it as TCB or taking care of business. You do what you have to do. Winter is coming so we must prepare!

AWFUL!

The thrifting situation has been awful and dismal. Yes those are strong words! I read your blogs about the thrifting riches, the Pyrex cornucopia, the plethora of vintage linens all because of something called spring cleaning......

So I was realy psyched when I saw that there would be a flea market in a church basement in Verdun! Oh JOY OH BLISS!

Not what does a flea market in a church basement mean? Usually it's vonlunteers from the church that gather second hand stuff and also sell tables for commoners to sell their unwanted wares.....usually there's a counter with snacks and coffee.

NO SIREE! No church vonlunteers, no snack counter, no thrifting joy....Just cheap dealers, selling leftover cheap new flea market stuff and vintage expensive stuff. At one table a guy was selling Star Trek glasses @ 5 $ each (the new star trek)....I got those glasses new in box shipping included for 20$ on ebay (a gift to my lovely Dan). I saw boxes and boxes of mood rings and cheap jewelry and at one point I could not take this a single minute more!

I ran to 2nd avenue for some respite and came across my old appartment....

It was in 1992. It was a large 6 1/2 with wood floor and the rent was....
Are you ready? 450.00$ a month. No not heat included.

Here is my balcony on top where I grew herbs.
It was a nice place to live but the neighborhood left a lot to be desired....lots of poverty, social welfare, unwed mothers, drugs, crime you name it they had it!

Across the street I was remonded of something else....

Yes there are still Xmas ornements in the tree!

Here lived a really LARGE woman who would come out every morning and pick out the trash from her lawn. In her night gown WITH NO UNDERWEAR. Yes I saw some things no unwilling person should see! I wanted to gouge my eyes out and scream at the top of my lungs OH THE HUMANITY! GOD TAKE ME NOW!
By the looks of grass she's not living there anymore!

On a more palatable note....

 Yes Barbie cakes still exists!

For all you french fries lovers I took a pic of Patate Normand; a Verdun institution. Just the prospect of a fry from that joint would put me in a transe! Those were amazing patates! Since the name is now Casse-Croute (Snack Bar) Normand they probably changed owners and I wonder if the fries are still amazing....Maybe another time!

And last but not least.....
A Pyrex sighting!

A Woodland bowl hidden in a flea market (small thirft). I didn't see the price but I bet it was at least 15$. NOT THRIFTY AT ALL! DID THEY READ COUNTRY LIVING? DAMN YOU COUNTRY LIVING!
I now must go, the open road beckons and the possibilities too!
Good saturday and good thrifting :)

Across the River

I decided yesterday to cross the river and check out what the thrift stores had in store for me. You know how it is you need to keep both eyes opened! You never know what you might find!

I'm sure they had owls like that on That 70's show. They sure would match her kitchen!

Veggie S&P with a napking holder, new in box.

Vintage squeezy Ketchup and Mustard dispensers still in their packaging.

And this adorable yet kitschy Coffee Set from Japan.

Too bad I didn't find anything for me; I did find a piece of Pyrex....of course I already have it....so I was thinking , I don't know....maybe a giveaway soon.

My craaaazzzzzyyyy aunt sent me a copy of a new testament, that has her as the sole beneficiary....I can't say for sure I didn't have the courage to open the enveloppe...I wonder if it was made before or after my mother lost ALL of her marbles...

On another subject: I've been hoarding stuff to list in my Etsy store, but I was lazy and didn't take pics or list any  goodies. So this afternoon I should be hard at work and list, list, list!
