Letting go

Well this is spring cleaning time and we're going full throttle!

We changed home insurance and they are sending an inspector for a risk assessment (oh joy oh bliss)

so we'd better clean up the basement FAST!

It was a hard decision but I decided to let go of some Pyrex...Yep, culling the Pyrex.

Here's what i'm letting go so far

An Old Orchard bowl set. I'm happy to say that my SIL Johanne adopted them right away!

                                A Woodlands bowl set

A Promo Hearts casserole with warmer

A Golden Acorn divided dish

I've texted my cousins but I'm doubtful they will adopt

I won't be putting them in the shop because people will be reluctant to pay the hight shipping for those heavy pieces.
There are no flea markets renting booths in my area and I don't feel like keeping them for a garage sale....

So in case you want them, I'm giving them away but you'll need to pay the shipping.

Otherwise they will be headed to my friendly neighborhood church basement.

Deciding to let go feels amazing!

What I left behind

Thank you all for visiting!  It warmed the cockles of my heart to read all your comments.

I think what Dan hates about the Goodwill is the smell of poverty: Not that clean, not spring fresh, with a lingering scent of grease and tobacco. What can I say? I'll brave pretty much everything for the lure of Pyrex and a good deal! LOL

If I'd win the lottery (6/49 for my canadians friends or the SuperBall for my american friends) I would not quit thrifting, naynay, no siree bob! I would buy a mini van and thrift FULL TIME!

And let's face it Dan loves a good deal too. We were in an antique mall in Brockville when I heard the sweet music of thrifting love and I heard: Just how much do they sell a new roof shovel for? This one is 20$. Next thing I knew the guy pocketed 15$ and the shovel was in the car with all its extentions.

Yep just like that In case you're wondering retail it's 50$ plus tax.

Ok now for the Pyrex that didn't make the cut!

Not my favorite pattern!

I got a casserole in Maine and that was enough.
Besides this was not in very good condition!

24$ each, I rest my case!

I'd like to introduce a new friend, not yet an official pet. We call him Piccolo Nero and he just hangs around the house and looks famished. Dam draged him inside yesterdat 'coz he was covered with freezing rain. We dried him off, fed him and he played and napped, finally he went back outside only when he passed Dan's dry test.

Well that's all folks! Have a great night and a sweet Monday :)

Pyrexlicious Weekend!

Saturday was the perfect day to go to Chinatown and enjoy a nice dim sum with Dad, Josée,Nathalie,Dan and of course Henry! Josée and Nathalie are my cousins. We always have fun when we meet! It was Henry's first time at a dim sum....

Here he is enjoying some HarGow (shrimp dumplings).
After a bit of grocery shopping (seaweeds, soya sauce, hoisin sauce, jasmin tea) we headed back to my Dad's place where he surprised me with the gift of Pyrex....

From left to right: Woodlands 401 and 403, Autumn Harvest 402 and a green Primary 403.
Here's a closer look at the green bowl....

On the left is my mom's green 403 and on the right the one dad gave me. Notice the color difference. The right one is much older that the left one. It is also thicker. The bottom markings don't include the bowl size, a sure sing of it's age. Primary bowls were introduced in 1947, so this one is probably from that period!

On Sunday after our dance lesson  we headed to Ste-Genevieve (near Pierrefonds) on the island of Montreal to the flea market. It is a small flea opened only on Sundays. It consists of an old house and further down in the parking lot a big 'barn' with more vendors in. The inside of the house is a big jumble bordering on an episode of Hoarders. In the big 'barn' different vendors sell everything from dishes, dolls, furniture, comic books...You want it they probably have it. My favorite booth (and always the last one I visit) is the Appaloosa Antiques & Collectables. At last someone selling my kind of stuff! And reasonnable too!Fireking,Pyrex,Glasbake,Federal...Casseroles,glasses,dishes,barware etc....And I'm sure I missed half the wonderful wares because I was hypnotized by this:

Yes it is...The 2qt Turquoise Snowflake Space Saver Casserole with metal lid! Originaly sold in a set : A 2qt with metal lid and a 1 1/4qt with a glass lid. The nmetal lid was designed to go in the freezer and you could put another casserole dish on top! Totally Fab! I had been looking for one for quite a while...Even the eBay Gods were frowning on me! I bet on more of those than I care to remember and they were always toooo expensive.

You are now looking at one happy camper!

VTT: Pyrex Butter Dishes

Merry VTT to everybody!
I decided to post earlier this week. Something about the early bird...You know!
So today it's about the Pyrex butterdishes. I was so sure I had 8 of them. I looked and looked and turns out I only have 7. They only made 7.
They all were manufactured in the late 60's- early 70's. The patterns are (from the first pic) clockwise left to right: Old Town Blue, Snowflake Blue, Spring Blossom Green, Woodland,
Autumn Harvest, Butterfly Gold, and the classic Butterprint.
Do you remember when I wrote that my interest in Pyrex keeps changing?
Well The butterdishes are the perfect example! I had no interest for them until I realised the bowls were taking over the house...So I needed to find smaller pieces...Hence the butterdishes!
I love having one on my kitchen counter filled with a stick of glorious butter goodness! YUM!

Pizza ? Did someone say Pizza???

Wow already my 98th post! Time flies.....
I don't think I'll be doing anything special to celebrate my 100th post, because very often I can't enter other blogger's giveaways because I'm from Canada....So back at you! And I officially know of 2 Canadians who follow my blog....One of them being my dad!!!

On to the other matters! I LOVE pizza! Last night Dan (my better half) was kind enough to take me to my fave pizza place....Woodland Pizza in Verdun (my old neighbourhood). It's fascinating that the taste didn't change after 49 years. Well actually I have been going and ordering from them since 1991 and still that amazing dough to pepperoni to cheese ratio....We ordered a bigger one so we could have some for lunch today!

It's 20 to 9 in the A.M. and I'm starting to hear the pizza calling me from the fridge.....Man oh man that is hard!
Hum pizza....I'm so like Homer Simpson for pizza...(and for beer! lol)
My other fave pizza joint is Bill's pizza in OOB Maine (Old orchard Beach). Their plain pie is to die for! Really....I can wait to sink my teeth in a big juicy slice......LOL
I won't eat just any old pizza....I don't like thick crust or too much cheese (2 inches of cheese on the pizza is too much!!!). I'm not crazy about Pizza Hut or Dominos (well not Domino's in Quebec at least, I had a great one in Cape Ann, Mass a while back).Never had a Papa Gino's....And the one near my house (Expo pizzeria) is ok, but I think the pizza man or woman is not giving their 100%. When I order thin crust not too much cheese, very often the crust and the cheese are too toasted (dark) so not as great as it could be....
Some of my earliest memories are eating pizza with my dad at Pizzeria Napolitaine on Park ave in Montreal and of wanting pizza for supper for my B-Day. Waiting for the bus after figure skating practice in front of Pendelis Pizza in Outremont ( I was 10) and asking for the little ball of bread they put in the middle of the pie (not that weird looking little round plastic table most places now use) . As a young adult I had a boyfriend in Park Extension and a great love affair with a pizza place on Bloomfield ave. I swear when we broke off I was more sad to leave the pizza place than him, and there was No way I would go back to that WEIRD neighbourhood....LOL
And I should not forget the pizza and calzones from Trattoria Gioia in Rome, I think we would eat there nearly every night.....
Wow quite a trip down memory lane.....

Re-arranging

I do have a lot of Pyrex....but never too much! And I realized that I don't really use it in sets ( Even if I make the bowl set rotation in the kitchen...like a set du jour, or more a set du mois-I try to change the bowl set every month-not always working!!!)
I realized that I use my bowls in sizes: I cut ingredients for a recipe, I pull out a lot of small 501 bowls, bigger recipe bigger bowls (you get the picture? I'm sure you do!) So I decided to re-arrange my big armoire to feature all the 501s together, all the little casseroles....So far I have done only one shelf, but so far so good! Not working outside the house is pretty exhausting! LOL
And let's face it boys and girls I will have to start looking for work pretty soon :(
But I digress....

And thank you for asking I do feel better! lol
And I have finished season 2 of Angel...On to season 3!!!
I promise not to stuff myself with mindless tv. I will watch it in small doses (Only one or 2 episodes daily!!!)
Actually I have no idea if I'll be able to manage that....chukles...Is there a TV anonymous???? Or an internet anonymous???
Don't you just love the color of Pyrex? It still makes my heart sing!
But the collection takes a lot of place....Why, oh why didn't I fall in love with stamps.....coins???? something light and small???
Probably because I am so visual and the Pyrex colors and the patterns.... A true JOY for my color starved eyes.....Spring oh spring were art thou?
Ok my shakesperian spelling leaves something to be desired! Like all of you are so perfect!!!

LOL kidding, kidding of course you know I'm kidding....
Well folks, be good ,eat your veggies and above all be kind to your neighbors
(You never know they might have some Pyrex.....lol)

Dreams do come true...

I already mentioned the Pyrex soldiers led by my dear Dad in a previous post; well they came trough BIG time!!!
I got this amazing and very rare canadian Pyrex delphite casserole! I am in awe....I make a point to use as much of my pieces as possible, but I might make an exception on that one! It looks more fragile than regular Pyrex.
Next we have a beautiful Woodland 473 casserole (If you had told me two months ago that I would like brown I would've pucked-yes I tell you!), I love that design!!!

Next two new beauties...A Horizon divided vegetable dish, I just love that color and the lid pattern is really distinctive. It makes it hard to tell it is Horizon coz' they keep changing the pattern! And Dad actually said " Please stop it smells like Pyrex" How crazy is that? What does Pyrex smell like?
And last but not least, a really popular casserole in the Pyrex in action group on Flickr: the Heinz promo casserole (buy 3 Heinz products and for .79 cents get this beautiful casserole). What I find interesting is that the shape and color are unsusual, the company never made other pieces like that (not that I know of....)

I feel truly blessed and spoiled to get all those wonderful Pyrex pieces.

Thanks Dad- Merci Papa :)

Early B-Day!!!

Even if my birthday is next friday (the 22nd), I got to see my dad today and after lunch (at the Deer Garden in the Chinatown) I received some early B-Day presents!!!

HUUUUMMM Pyrex! Delicious! I believe these bowls are from the 80's, but I couldn't find any information to coroborate my findings.

Of course you recognize a nice set of Woodlands. I find them much more attractive in person, they are all shiny and I love the design, I just feel the colors lack PUNCH!

And last but not least a nice 475 Crazy Daisy casserole....I can already smell the Shepherd's Pie...
I also got the latest mario Batali cook book "Italian Grill" and two kitty themed books "Les Chats vu par Bruno Masure" and "La grace et l'independance du chat". I am a happy camper!!!

3.37$

From the Salvation Army of course! 1.99 for the Butterfly Gold bowl and .69 cents each for the Corelle Woodlands saucers. I use those saucers as food dishes for the kitties and to tell you the truth I love them. They are durable, don't complain in the dishwasher and pretty too! To tell you the truth my mom was kinf of snob and Corelle was...not for us, so I was brought up thinking Corelle were some kind of crappy dishes. Now I know better!!!
