2018 Recap part 2

Starting in June it was PURGE time!

and I started selling stuff in the classified.

 My Dad collected Flameware from Pyrex...so all I did't want I listed on Facebook

 You can't tell but underneath the kitty and the throw was

a beautiful Mid-Century report turquoise chair.

It was beautiful but so uncomfortable!

I hope the new owners are happy with it!

 Just a small collection of my Dad's pitchers

I found a good home for them...

 This beautiful Teak leaf table was listed on the classified and 

went to a good home.

We sold 2 of these chairs and kept the third one.

we also sold patio furniture, a smoker, a planer, a router with bits...

and a Queen duvet cover, a pink coffee maker....

and much stuff I am forgetting about!

So right now I am too tired to continue....Sorry

Seen Around

Every year ,when I go to see the lung doctor,

I make a point of stopping at the Saint Vinnie thrift shop ,you know just for kicks!

The pickings are usually pretty slim. It is situated in a very poor neighborhood.

Here's what I saw:

 A vintage nativity, I'm guessing 60's or 70's.

 This I've never seen! A 12 days of Xmas glass set!

I nearly bought it, but I could hear my better (or not) half say:

What? we don't have enough glasses????

 This one looked like a cross between DIY and a vintage liquor bottle.

Last but not least a Pyrex Flameware without its handle.

Just what happened to it? I guess will never know!

VTT: Gran mimi's recipe box

I have to admit that I took my inspiration for VTT from Suzanne @ Colorado Lady .Even if my house is overflowing with vintage and antique goodies, I find racking my brain trying to find things for VTT. When I saw her post on the recipe box she found, I thought of my grandmother's.

When my grandmother was getting on in years and eventually placed in a long term care facility, there was a big thing in the family about her recipes: They were no where to be found, someone had lost them, no they were found, oops they disapeared again. It was like paintings stolen by the Nazi!

 So one time last year I was over at my Dad's and spelunking in the apt downstairs for some Pyrex....And I find this

My Dad says that it belonged to Granmimi and maybe I would like to take it home? Of course I would! It's cute,vintage and full of memories of my grandma!

Most of the recipe cards are unused and most of the recipes are newspaper clippings from The Montreal Gazette. She loved to read that newspaper....and guess what? I do too! And I clip a lot of recipes from it also. I don't think she made those recipes there isn't any sign of spillage on any of them...

And just what is Veal with fufu??? That cracked me up!

And guess what I found????

Yes that is a pic of a Pyrex Flameware double boiler! If you want my opinion it is a must if you like to cook!

 Going through my grandma's recipe box this morning was like visiting with her (even if those are not the fabled missing recipes!!!) Have a great VTT everybody! 

Pyrex Prize Recipes

As some of you might know.....I looooooovvvvvvveeeeee

Pyrex!

I also love vintage cookbooks. So it was with great thrill that I bought the Pyrex prize recipes cookbook last year.

I don't always try the recipes, in fact I really enjoy looking at the pictures and fantasizing about the way life used to be...

I did try one recipe ;the coffee crumb cake. It was good but not AMAZING and awfully messy with all those crumbs,and I'm a bit of a cheapskate so 3/4 cups of pecans was mighty expensive!

This book was published in 1953 and dedicated to all men,women and children who love to cook in Pyrex ware.I doubt very much that a lot of men were cooking in 1953....maybe bachelors and widowers but i'm sceptical!

My copy belonged to Rose French of Elmira N.Y and she got it May 16th 1956. I checked the internet and Mother's Day was on May 13th that year,maybe it was a belated gift. I like the fact that my book used to belong to a real person and I wonder what recipes she made.

And the pictures! Oh my,oh my!

Look at all the different ways you can use your Pyrex Flameware coffepot!

You can use it for iced tea, cooking corn,sausages,tomato sauce,asparagus and the white one in the middle is......believe it or not.....Spaghetti! LOL
I guess you can use it to brew coffee as well...

What about a buffet spread served uniquely in Pyrex? It can be done!

You need a primary colors refrigerator set, a primary colors bowl set (series 400) and 2 hostess sets (one red and one yellow) and last but not least some Flameware coffeepots to serve the beverages!

I love the flower arrangement done in the green bowl.

I also like to see what people ate. I see chicken,rolls, salad,olives,nuts and POPCORN??? Do you eat popcorn with chicken?

It makes me think of the Peanuts thanksgiving cartoon where Peppermint Patty serves toast,jelly beans and popcorn...

It's been a while (a big long while, or at least it seems) since I trhifted and bought things for myself. It's mainly because I didn't find things I needed. Since I have quite a large collection of Pyrex, when I find a piece I ususally have it, it's too expensive or it's chipped.

This has been quite a lesson to learn: I must not bring home pieces that are cracked or chipped or faded. At one point I got so excited that I was blinded by Pyrexia and couldn't see anything in my collecting frenzy....Then I would come down from the high and be soooooo disappointed to find that the bowl wasn't up to par.....So this morning I decided to go to my friendly neighborhood church basement for a nice quiet thrift hunt....Well, well! I found this delightful Pyrex flameware coffee pot, one I hadn't seen before, with a clip on the metal band and so it is real easy to clean, a super cute ladybug pilowcase and a card of black crystal vintage buttons and all for the super dooper price of one dollar!!! It doesn't get any better than this....lol

I think my father will adopt the coffee pot because he now collects Flameware and Fry glass....

Also on the thrifting front 2 weeks ago I went downtown (Montreal) to the salvation army and found one of these Corning army bowls that I keep seeing in Flickr and Pyrex love. For a piece that has probably been to the front it is in wonderful shape a bit scratched but let's face it I have a couple of scratches as well!!! And I paid .69 cents for it, so I figured it is worth it.

On a non thrifting subject.....I started watching Buffy the vampire slayer season 4 (I tell you it's like eating chips.....) And too bad Angel left 'coz Buffy is all sad and moppy....

I hope to blog tomorrow as well because I feel I have slacked off.....Don't put your Pyrex in the dishwasher....

Tuesday's finds

It was very cold ,humid and grey last Tuesday in Montreal...Brrrrr!

I saw the same characters as I usually do...Don't ask me why, but the bulk of Salvation army shoppers I see are the same old chronies...lol

Anyways I found a 4 cup Pyrex Flameware coffee pot (without the insides), 2 Corelle saucer for the kitties and a Better homes and Garden book "Favorite ways with chicken" Those pictures are really funny today back in 1967 they were probably very chic and elegant! Ooohlala!!!
My Etsy boutique keeps me busy and non-vintage items I list on Ebay...Must clean the house!!! I made my first etsy sale Saturday and I was very excited! I hope I sell more things soon...:) This afternoon I will install my printer and try to scan things and print. I need to post some of those beautiful chicken pictures...lol

Belated Salvation army post

Better late than never!!!

First of all this is the Pittsburg souvenir tray. I got it after a flickr member expressed an interest in it..It is already on it's way to the Pittsburg area. How cool is that?

Next I got this swatch of beautiful psychadelic shocking pink and orange fabric for 1.50$. I also found parts of Pyrex...A handle for Flameware (the set came with 3 pots and just one handle..can you see something wrong with this picture???) I mean when your pot is on the stove with a handle the heat makes it swell and you can't remove the handle....So multiple handles are a MUST if you have flameware! And lo and behold a double boiler lid for my Dad, he had the bottom, I gave him the insert and finally the set will be complete....fantastic

I need to talk about the Salvation Army personnel...They're a bunch of characters allright!!! But I must say Hi to a special cashier, I don't know her name yet, but everytime a price is missing on your items she just yells 25 cents!!! How cool is that!!! That is what I paid for the double boiler lid and the Flameware Handle! WOW! Thank you anonymous Salvation Army Cashier! Thank you!!!

Flameware!

I was kind of sceptical when I first saw these on the Internet. But now I couldn't imagine my kitchen without them. I use the teapot all the time and I even tried it to cook hard boiled eggs as seen in the book: Pyrex prize recipes. The eggs were cooked too much with that grey ring around the yolk (eurk). I might try the coffee pot to cook corn on the cob...I will keep you posted!


When you read old Pyrex advertisements, it is always stated that Flameware cleans easier. I don't think so! It tends to make a whitish film at the bottom, that is real hard to clean. I haven't tried Barkeeper's friend on it yet, we'll see.

But one thing is for sure, it is that I love the shape of these. Their look is so retro cool... And as long as you use the little metal grids, they are perfectly safe to use.
