oh my! This is my first seen around post of 2016!

We went to Plattsburg, NY last Saturday as a wee roadtrip. i needed a change SO BAD!

I was well prepared and Dan was super relaxed and opened to the thrift. Before lunch I visited 2 thrifts without sucess. But that doesn't mean I didn't see cool stuff!

Hostess with the mostest!

Time flies when you're having fun/try to fix the house/work full time/try to fix healthy balanced meals/want to blog/need to thrift and love tv!

I even managed to throw my back. I couldn't put socks on! LOL

Fall is definitely upon us and the temperatures are dipping. I don't want to be pessimisstic but I don't think I will break my record of taking a dip in the pool on Thanksgiving.

I'm also trying to list all I can in the shop before October, so I'm ahead of the Xmas rush....

Xmas! How I love thee. We are moving at work and they are cramping us all up so believe it or not there won't be anymore place for the Xmas decorations! CRAZY!

So they were giving it all away. I had fun rummaging through the bins and picked up a few goodies.

Now about the title...I haven't forgoten about my goal to show my Pyrex collection

So here are the Hostess casseroles....

Now I don't have a bracket...and I'm missing some like the black one....!

I would LOVE to find one

Retro Tuesday: I tried it and it was GOOOOODDDDD!

Good morning fantabulous thrifty readers! I have now 71 followers! Cool! Welcome everyone!

Today is more of a follow up...Remember a couple of weeks ago I did a Retro Tuesday post about Pyrex Prize Recipes? If not you can it HERE .

The BBQ chicken recipe was taunting me....Big time! Even if my pal Maureen thought the bird in the pic was about to take flight!

Even if the sauce recipe was a bit time consuming...lots of veggies to cut. I made the sauce in the morning before going to the postal counter of UNjoy. When I came home (5:20 pm) i threw the chicken with the sauce in Pyrex casseroles in the oven and presto chango- Supper!

The recipe called for  3 packages frozen chicken parts. I used drumsticks because they were on sale and let's face it there's only one bone to deal with. As I grow older I find i'm not to eager to find little bones in the sauce. Also It takes more than 1 hour total to cook. I'd say more like 1:30 total if you want fall of the bone goodness. And I removed the skin-who needs all that fat? I don't. Maybe you do, if so keep the skin!

It was even better reheated!

Don't expect real smoky BBQ flavor, the sauce is very pleasant but not BBQuy at all.

I might try it in the crockpot also....Erin, you up for it?

 So the saying might be true that everything tastes better in Pyrex!

Oh by the way....It doesn't fit in that gorgeous yellow bowl...And the bird is about to take flight!LOL

Retro Tuesday: Hostess Set & Prize Recipes

Hostess set? What the? Of course I'm talking about Pyrex people!

So looking for something sweet for Retro Tuesday I laid eyes upon my Pyrex Prize Recipes book published in 1953.

Leafing through it I couldn't help but fawn over the Hostess Set. No I don't have a complete one, I have pieces of one...

 And this recipe looks almost edible in the bright red bowl!

Not only tasty but inexpensive! Ok I admit that this might be pretty good on a cold night! Is this a side dish or the main dish? Any idea?

BBQ chicken with all the fixings! Doesn't look really BBQ but I could definitely eat this!

See? everything tastes and look better in Pyrex!

It's a known fact! So get in the kitchen and cook something in Pyrex!

Pyrex Prize Recipes

As some of you might know.....I looooooovvvvvvveeeeee

Pyrex!

I also love vintage cookbooks. So it was with great thrill that I bought the Pyrex prize recipes cookbook last year.

I don't always try the recipes, in fact I really enjoy looking at the pictures and fantasizing about the way life used to be...

I did try one recipe ;the coffee crumb cake. It was good but not AMAZING and awfully messy with all those crumbs,and I'm a bit of a cheapskate so 3/4 cups of pecans was mighty expensive!

This book was published in 1953 and dedicated to all men,women and children who love to cook in Pyrex ware.I doubt very much that a lot of men were cooking in 1953....maybe bachelors and widowers but i'm sceptical!

My copy belonged to Rose French of Elmira N.Y and she got it May 16th 1956. I checked the internet and Mother's Day was on May 13th that year,maybe it was a belated gift. I like the fact that my book used to belong to a real person and I wonder what recipes she made.

And the pictures! Oh my,oh my!

Look at all the different ways you can use your Pyrex Flameware coffepot!

You can use it for iced tea, cooking corn,sausages,tomato sauce,asparagus and the white one in the middle is......believe it or not.....Spaghetti! LOL
I guess you can use it to brew coffee as well...

What about a buffet spread served uniquely in Pyrex? It can be done!

You need a primary colors refrigerator set, a primary colors bowl set (series 400) and 2 hostess sets (one red and one yellow) and last but not least some Flameware coffeepots to serve the beverages!

I love the flower arrangement done in the green bowl.

I also like to see what people ate. I see chicken,rolls, salad,olives,nuts and POPCORN??? Do you eat popcorn with chicken?

It makes me think of the Peanuts thanksgiving cartoon where Peppermint Patty serves toast,jelly beans and popcorn...

The Barn

You know how you can walk or drive past something really extraordinary a gazillion times and not notice?

Well....it happened to us yesterday. After the dance class (which was so much fun by the way!)

We decided to grab a bite in Hudson maybe 15 minutes away and near our destination there it was....

A big old barn with opened doors and tatered flags, you know the ones, re,white and blue and writen 'Antiques' on them.

Unfortunately we could stop we were too hungry (line dancing really makes you work out an appetite)
So after a delicious lunch of roast beef sandwich au jus and key lime pie, we went back to the said barn. By the way the pics are front the 'backyard' of the Willow Place Inn in Hudson.

I was a bit apprehensive at first because it looked and felt like the Pick n Paw, remember the Pick n Paw? if not you you can read about it in this post http://vonlipisfavorites.blogspot.com/2009/09/pick-n-paw.html

It sure looked like it! All dusty and opened cupboards full of half full water bottles, an the guy said: if you have questions I'll be in the car...After the first few feet it became quite apparent that this was the bestest barn EVER! I believe all the collectibles were represented here! No joke!

I saw glasses,dishes,McCoy,Glasbake,LeCreuset,rolling pins,barware,lanterns,luggage,lamps,furniture,cups,decanters,boxes,tins,bottles,sports gear,Fireking and of course the big P...the Pyrex. I never knew such a gem existed so near! It was so full of stuff, I'm sure I missed some. The biggest concentration of Pyrex i had seen in a long time...I had to pick up my jaw from the floor!

And for a big barn by the side of the road it is surprisingly clean, I didn't see mouse poo! How does one keep this big space so clean? And no spider webs! The only problem was the lack of lighting...Next time we'll be sure to bring flashlights!!! I found these 2 little guys in great condition for a very fair price.

Less than I paid for one in Brimfield Mass....

I'll be back to the barn...fo'sure!

OOOoooh! Beans

Even if I chek everyday (I swear I do!!!) I was quite surprised to find these tresures waiting for me! It 's always a big deal when I get my first fresh beans.

These might be my all time fave veg, when cooked perfectly they are tender and have a little fuzz on them...But I find this only in my garden grown beans. And what a coincidence that I go in the garden with this Pyrex red bowl! I like the colors of this pic the green beans, the red bowl, the redwood patio and the textures too.

When I first started this blog/pic/etsy thing I never thought I would enjoy taking pictures so much-some are good, some are really good, some are bad....but it's trial and error like all things in life! I've had a really good week mentally, all the pieces seem to fit togheter and I'm in the zone. OooooH baby I love the zone! Where I can do no wrong...Where everything I try seems easy....and everything is fun and new

Speaking of fun....Here are some pics of the cool stuff I found in my beloved church basement!

The Pana-Vue reminds me of my childhood...Dad was definitely a slide man! He had boxes and boxes of them and every one in a while we would put on a show (a big classic in the 60's)

The cute cups are minty fresh and I don't think the ones with the pear were even used once! Cool!!!

I hope the rain stays away for 2morrow coz' we'll be visiting a big garage sale and the Salvation Army (to donate as well as shop....) Oh the possibilities.....

Crazy fun....

Who knew just how much fun I could have with Pyrex???
A few of us were issued a challenge to do our own version of a photo in Pyrex in action...A sqare hostess set bowl with a candle and glass chunks as a center piece.
Since I have 3 of those bowls I decided to do 3 versions. Here they are!!!
Two things that bug me: I didn't have enough sea glass and my red bowl was too small!!! It would've looked better bigger with those big pine cones...Anyways it is a cheap, fast and fun way to do a centerpiece for any occasion....

Oranges & lemons

Since after a month of daily rain, Mother nature decided to plunge us in a heat wave....I stayed mostly inside today and took pictures of....you guessed it! Pyrex! Big, bold beautiful Pyrex....

I try to use my Pyrex as much as possible. When I plan meals I also ask myself: Which Pyrex would enhance the look of the food? I which bowl or casserole should I serve this salad?

The bowl sizes all have different purposes (for me at least). The 401 is the soup bowl, the cereal bowl...The 402 is wonderful for individual popcorn serving or a small salad. The 403 is the all purpose mixing and salad serving. The 404 is for big tasks, like holding fruit or mixing up big batches of stuff especially around Xmas.

But everytime I look at that citrusy carafe, I cannot use it, it looks soooo fragile! So I just display it for the time being....

3.97 !!! WOW

On my Wednesday edition of the Salvation Army hunt I found (drumroll.....)

A very nice minty stainless steel cocktail shaker (my love had been looking for one) missing the lid (1.99$). A red Pyrex small square bowl from the hostess set (.99 cents )and last but not least a flamingo pie plate, really crudy and dirty but only .99 cents!!! Oh joy oh bliss!!! That really made my day!

I won't be going downtown for a couple of weeks but I might visit other Salvation Army locations...After all I just found out about the 10 locations in the greater Montreal area!!!

After I had a nice lunch with two of my good friends: Annick and Annie, who happen to be ex-coworkers as well (but not ex-friends!!!). We had a ball. I really miss the social aspect of work! I did say tons of stupid and inappropriate things! Annie was wiping her eyes and Annick was hiiting the table with her fist! Good times....
